Secure Self-Hosted Hermes AI Agent Deployment

A practical deployment package for customer-owned Hermes Agent infrastructure on a VPS, cloud instance, or home server.

Overview

For teams that want a real agent server, not only a local demo.

I install, configure, and document a self-hosted Hermes Agent environment with secure defaults, messaging integration, backups, and an operational handoff.

Included

Deployment scope

Server baseline

  • Ubuntu server setup
  • Firewall defaults
  • fail2ban
  • unattended upgrades
  • restart-on-reboot behavior

Hermes runtime

  • Hermes Agent installation
  • Docker Compose runtime
  • Persistent data paths
  • Generated configuration
  • Verification checklist

Messaging integration

  • Telegram gateway setup
  • Optional Discord integration
  • Allowed-user access control
  • Provider/API key configuration

Operations handoff

  • Optional dashboard
  • Tailscale or reverse proxy access
  • Simple backups
  • Restore notes
  • Handoff documentation

Security model

Private by default.

Dashboard and API surfaces should stay private unless public exposure is deliberately designed. Tailscale is the preferred private access path. A reverse proxy can be added when a public domain, TLS, and access controls are required.

The goal is simple: your agent runs on infrastructure you control, with enough operational documentation to restart, inspect, back up, and hand off the system.

Who it is for

Good fit

Good fit

Founders, developers, small teams, and agencies that need self-hosted AI automation infrastructure with practical DevOps support.

Not the best fit
